Heads up: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you choose to use them — at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools I personally use and trust.

I don't know about you, but I’ve been getting “AI overwhelmed” lately.

Every day there's a new shiny AI tool launching with flashy demos and cool examples that look amazing in theory of strategy for freelance platforms, but have zero real-world application for freelancers.

Don't get me wrong - I love using AI. But I bring it down to the basics: simple prompts that actually work and move the needle for my business.

While everyone is trying to figure out what Sora 2 is actually helpful for, let me show you 3 basic Claude prompts you can use to get more freelance clients today.

(And yes, Claude >>> ChatGPT)

How I Learned to Prompt Claude Code Better

Quick confession: my early Claude prompts were terrible.

Too vague. Too clever. Too “AI bro.”

What changed everything was treating Claude prompts like systems. I stopped asking Claude to think for me and started asking it to organize my thinking. Here’s what made my prompts noticeably better:

  • Clear context first (who I am, who the client is, what stage I’m at)
  • One outcome per prompt
  • Real inputs (notes, call transcripts, messy thoughts)

Once I did that, Claude stopped giving generic answers and started producing responses I could actually send to clients.

That’s the difference between playing with AI and using it as part of a real freelance strategy.

The 3-Step Client Acquisition System

  • Prompt 1: Get clear on your freelancer value (so you can sell yourself confidently)
  • Prompt  2: Get meetings in the books (leverage your network strategically)
  • Prompt 3: Close those meetings (with tailored follow-ups that convert)

Prompt #1: The "Know Your Worth" Skills Extraction

Before you do anything, you have to be clear on what you bring to the table. Most freelancers can't articulate their value clearly. They suffer from imposter syndrome and struggle to sell themselves confidently.

The brain dump: Write down all your past jobs, key projects, contributions, results you achieved. Don’t worry about making it pretty, literally type out your professional life and things you did at work and on freelance projects like you’re talking to a friend about it. Then plug it in the prompt below.

The exact prompt:
"I need you to pull out my skills, my competencies and my track record so I can start selling myself and my services to [insert your target audience]. Here's my background: [paste your brain dump].

Then, help me list out my value proposition to better understand and meet customer needs. Also help me understand what makes me unique as a freelancer based on my track record and how I can position it to close more clients. This should feel cohesive and simple to understand.”

Why this works: You can't sell what you can't articulate. This forces you to see your own value clearly.

Prompt #2: The "Meeting Magnet" Referral Strategy

Now that you have clarity on your value proposition from the previous Claude prompts, you can use it to start leveraging your network for leads. For this prompt, it’s important to describe what your network and Linkedin connections look like.

The exact prompt:
"I'm a [your service] freelancer looking to get more discovery calls. Here's my network analysis: [describe your connections - past clients, colleagues, industry contacts].

Help me create:
1) A referral request strategy for each type of contact
2) Specific email and linkedin DM templates that don't sound salesy
3) A systematic approach to activate my network
4) Ways to make referring me easy and valuable for them"

Why this works: Instead of cold outreach to strangers, you're getting warm introductions from people who already know and trust you. The close rate is exponentially higher.

Prompt #2 example

Prompt #3: The "Post-Call Clarity" Proposal Generator

Now that you’re getting calls in the books, start recording them using Fireflies or take detailed notes. After discovery calls, most freelancers send generic proposals that don't convert, but with this prompt you’ll start increasing your close rate.

The exact prompt:
"I just had a discovery call with a potential client. Based on these notes [paste your call notes], help me:

1) Summarize their key pain points in their exact words
2) Identify the biggest opportunities I can help with
3) Create a compelling follow-up email that references specific things they said
4) Draft a proposal outline that positions my solution as the obvious choice”

Why this works: Instead of generic proposals, you're speaking directly to their specific situation using their own language.

Prompt #3 example

Your Action Step

1. Use Prompt #1 to get clear on your value proposition.

2. Use Prompt #2 to activate your network and get more meetings.

3. Use Prompt #3 after every discovery call to create tailored follow-ups.

If you're still stuck in a 9-5, check out why freelancing is actually safer than a 9-5 in 2025 - these AI tools make the transition easier than ever.

The Bottom Line

These aren't random AI tips - they're a systematic approach to:

  1. Knowing your worth and communicating it confidently
  2. Getting meetings through strategic network activation
  3. Closing deals with tailored follow-ups

The best part about these prompts? They get better the more you use them. Claude learns your style and starts giving even more tailored responses.
